Every day, they make critical decisions to protect civilians, maintain essential public services, and support communities living just miles from active combat.

Their visit to Washington offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from some of the Ukrainian officials leading communities at the center of the war, about the realities of governing during wartime, the resilience of Ukraine’s frontline communities, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Moderated by Marshall Mayer, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Ukraine Aid International, the program will feature a multimedia presentation followed by a moderated
discussion and audience Q&A.

Guests will have an opportunity to hear firsthand perspectives on leadership during wartime, the humanitarian realities facing Ukraine’s frontline communities, and the challenges, and hope of rebuilding for the future.

Associate Research Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine

As an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine and while working at DuPont’s Central Research and Development as a senior computational scientist, I have applied my extensive informatics experience in the management and analysis of biological data to develop various bioinformatics algorithms and robust data analysis pipelines supporting diverse research groups in the field of biological sciences research. My current research focus is on the use of innovative technologies for building analysis engines that feed on high throughput heterogeneous biological datasets to extract actionable knowledge, and making this knowledge available to the research community through advanced interfaces and automated APIs. In addition to my research activities, I mentor graduate students in the bioinformatics program and provide direct hands on training in the field of High Performance Computing (HPC) for high throughput data analysis.

As part of the For Freedoms residency with the National Gallery of Art and the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design, visiting artist Cannupa Hanska Luger invites the D.C. community to make beads representing over 500,000 living bison in the form of 36 life-size sculptures. The Bison Bead Project stems from Luger’s Counting Coup social engagement series, which engages collective making to build large-scale collaborations that lend humanity to abstract data and connect us in the process. Corcoran students are hosting bead making workshops to help contribute to this massive project.

The authors write that the illusion of a two-state solution under the auspices of the Oslo Accords has allowed Israel to maintain a one-state reality of permanent occupation and apartheid.

Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man and Sarah Leah Whitson challenge this approach, presenting a road map to create a rights-respecting regime for everyone now living under Israeli control. Only once basic safety and legal equality are assured can Jewish Israelis and Palestinians determine their futures—in one, two, or more states if they choose—through an inclusive, democratic process. Breaking with the failures of the past, the plan presented here makes clear that ongoing violations of basic human rights must end before issues of governance can be equitably addressed.

All are invited to hear from authors Michael Omer-Man and Sarah Leah Whitson in this event moderated by Elliott School Professor Nathan Brown. This event is open to the general public and media. Speakers:

Michael Omer-Man is the Director of Israel-Palestine at DAWN. He is an expert on politics and society in the region, with a focus on Israel's policies of occupation and annexation, its civil and human rights record, and the influence of the US-Israel relationship over those areas. Prior to joining DAWN, Michael worked as a journalist in Israel-Palestine for more than 10 years. He served as the editor-in-chief of +972 Magazine for seven years and before that worked as an editor at The Jerusalem Post. In these roles, he closely covered Israeli and Palestinian grassroots movements and civil society campaigns, legislative trends, public opinion, as well as diplomatic and other efforts to strengthen accountability for Israeli abuses and the rule of law. Additionally, he created and produced two successful podcasts. He is regularly interviewed on these topics, and his analyses and reporting have been quoted by the BBC, Al Jazeera, Haaretz, The Daily Beast, NPR, and others. Omer-Man's book with Sarah Leah Whitson, "From Apartheid to Democracy: A Blueprint for Peace in Israel-Palestine," was published in September 2025 by University of California Press.

Sarah Leah Whitson is a lawyer and author with a focus on human rights, humanitarian law, and U.S. foreign policy. She served as executive director of DAWN, an organization that seeks to reform U.S. policy in the Middle East, from 2020 - 2026 and as executive director of Human Rights Watch's Middle East and North Africa Division from 2004 – 2020, overseeing the work of the division in 19 countries. She currently serves on the boards of the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians, the Artistic Freedom Initiative, ALQST for Human Rights, Action for Hope, the International Observatory for Democracy in Armenia, and the Armenian Bar Association, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Whitson has led dozens of advocacy and investigative missions in the MENA region, focusing on issues of armed conflict, human rights, accountability, and legal and policy reform. She has published widely in international and regional media, including The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, The Los Angeles Times, American Prospect, and CNN and appears regularly as a commentator in global media. Whitson’s book with Michael Omer-Man, “From Apartheid to Democracy: A Blueprint for Peace in Israel-Palestine,” was published in September 2025 by University of California Press. Previously, Whitson worked in New York for Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard Law School and is fluent in English, Arabic and Armenian.
Dr. Nathan Brown received his B.A. in political science from the University of Chicago and his M.A. and Ph.D. in politics and Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University. He teaches courses on Middle Eastern politics as well as more general courses on comparative politics and international relations. He received the Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Award for Scholarship from George Washington University in 2015 and the Harry Harding teaching award from the Elliott School of International Affairs in 2014. His dissertation received the Malcolm Kerr award from the Middle East Studies Association in 1987. In 2013-2015, Dr. Brown was president of the Middle East Studies Association, the academic association for scholars studying the region. In 2013, he was named a Guggenheim Fellow; four years earlier, he was named a Carnegie Scholar by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. For the 2009–2010 academic year, he was a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. His previous research was funded by the United States Institute of Peace and two Fulbright fellowships. In addition to his academic work, Brown serves on the board of trustees at the American University in Cairo. He is also nonresident senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He has previously served as an advisor for the committee drafting the Palestinian constitution, USAID, the United Nations Development Program, and several NGOs. Education.

Gerardo Peña is a veteran musician whose career spans more than five decades. He began his musical journey at the age of 14, performing with local Latin bands in Brooklyn, New York. Throughout his career, Peña has pursued extensive formal musical training, studying with accomplished musicians and educators including Mario Rivera and Gary Campbell. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music from Florida International University in Miami, Florida, in 1983. In the absence of federal action on climate change, GW’s Climate and Health Institute is relaunching and expanding former federal datasets through the Climate Indicators initiative, building durable, rigorous, and accessible resources for communities and decision-makers leading climate action nationwide. Rona will share progress on GW's Climate Indicators Initiative and discuss her past efforts as a leader at the interface of climate science and policy at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

A Gift In Motion loosely draws from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book The Serviceberry which uplifts Indigenous frameworks of the natural world to advance the possibilities in collectivity, reciprocity, and the mindset of abundance. These are anti-capitalist models and theories that provide insight into the systems of power we negotiate, but also offer a lens on how we individually move through our daily lives—together—through historically fraught landscapes. A keen reminder that working with, for, and because of each other remains the most human motivation, even while we are inundated with narratives that suggest otherwise.

Within the walls of the academy, frameworks of artistic and creative knowledge are often dismissed, as are Indigenous methodologies and community-focused perspectives that center human engagement, oral and craft-based practices, and unquantifiable research. A personal experience. A feeling. Abstraction. And yet, for centuries, within the walls of art schools exist myriad economies of imagination that are anchored in the sharing of diverse creative knowledge and articulated in what we make, write, perform, dance, build, conserve, collect, display, speak, and think. We do this all—in small and grand gestures, every day— in service of learning with and for each other in the crafting of the world we wish to see. Perhaps we are articulating the world we already see, even if no one else will.

This showcase brings together the creative, academic, and applied research of the full- and part-time faculty and staff from all seven programs that make up the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design. We—students, staff, and faculty—thrive in the abundance nurtured here, despite the outside world. In a moment when delight and despair are offered in the same breath, we continue to serve as each other’s audiences, toughest critics, and loudest cheerleaders. We ask difficult and sometimes scary questions about our lived experiences, and by default of each other, turning our questions into form and voice and movement again, and again.

This place is a harbor for the gift of imagination and critical thinking that is the act of creating the world we wish to see, together. To give. To live—in motion.

On September 16, speakers from across the country, with different occupations and from different backgrounds, will respond to the prompt: "What do you value and why? How do you put that value into practice in your life, for example in your political, economic, educational, or social positions?"

While these speakers may not represent every group in America, they represent a diversity of perspectives. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future and before many different audiences to widen our scope and hear from even more and different voices.

Born out of Idaho Listens, a Boise State speaking series program launched in 2022, America Listens creates space in a partisan era for conversations about values and a focus on listening as a model for understanding and humanizing our national discourse.

CCAS Short-Term Abroad Programs (STAP) present a unique way to complete coursework while traveling abroad. Travelling over spring break, this Geography course will introduce students to the “superdiverse” city of Brussels. The city of Brussels offers students direct access to policymakers and scholars of immigration, community organizations, and migrant communities, allowing them to examine how migration shapes urban life, social integration, housing, labor markets, and public policy in a contemporary European context. Students will have a chance to experience firsthand some of the immigration-related issues in Brussels that they will have read about prior to the visit through workshops, talks, visits to museums and field research in the city.

The course will introduce students to the skills necessary for practice as a culturally competent clinician, while participating in international collaborations in speech-language pathology. In collaboration with existing partners at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, students will have the opportunity to meet with local professionals; visit numerous service delivery sites, observe, and collaborate with health and education service providers, and experience and evaluate the scope of practice in Speech-Language Pathology in Mexico. Students will also participate in one of two language courses (beginner intermediate or advanced) to learn Spanish terminology specific to SLP. In addition to the professional site visits and collaborations, students will participate in several rich cultural events and encounters.

Mindfullness-Based Stress Reduction for the Real WorldSpeaker: Michelle Clausen PhD, MSN, CNM

Join the GW Resiliency and Well-Being Center for a Women’s Well-being Lecture Series talk on “Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for the Real World” at noon ET on Thursday, Sept.17, 2026, featuring Michelle Clausen PhD, MSN, CNM, a fellow in the Postdoctoral Primary Care Research Training (P-CART) program at the Resiliency & Well-Being Center in the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Clausen is focused on developing interventions that incorporate trauma- informed strategies and spirituality to improve health outcomes. With GW since 2005, she completed her undergraduate studies in Public Health in 2009, followed by GW’s accelerated nursing program in 2013 and obtained an MSN with a concentration in Nurse-Midwifery in 2015. In 2024, she completed her PhD at the GW School of Nursing, focusing on the impact of maternal factors, such as spiritual well-being and early childhood adversity, on pregnant individuals’ health.

The Women’s Well-Being Lecture Series is supported by the Rosemary Bowes, PhD, Women’s Mental Health Fund.

A Gift In Motion loosely draws from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book The Serviceberry which uplifts Indigenous frameworks of the natural world to advance the possibilities in collectivity, reciprocity, and the mindset of abundance. These are anti-capitalist models and theories that provide insight into the systems of power we negotiate, but also offer a lens on how we individually move through our daily lives—together—through historically fraught landscapes. A keen reminder that working with, for, and because of each other remains the most human motivation, even while we are inundated with narratives that suggest otherwise.

Within the walls of the academy, frameworks of artistic and creative knowledge are often dismissed, as are Indigenous methodologies and community-focused perspectives that center human engagement, oral and craft-based practices, and unquantifiable research. A personal experience. A feeling. Abstraction. And yet, for centuries, within the walls of art schools exist myriad economies of imagination that are anchored in the sharing of diverse creative knowledge and articulated in what we make, write, perform, dance, build, conserve, collect, display, speak, and think. We do this all—in small and grand gestures, every day— in service of learning with and for each other in the crafting of the world we wish to see. Perhaps we are articulating the world we already see, even if no one else will.

This showcase brings together the creative, academic, and applied research of the full- and part-time faculty and staff from all seven programs that make up the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design. We—students, staff, and faculty—thrive in the abundance nurtured here, despite the outside world. In a moment when delight and despair are offered in the same breath, we continue to serve as each other’s audiences, toughest critics, and loudest cheerleaders. We ask difficult and sometimes scary questions about our lived experiences, and by default of each other, turning our questions into form and voice and movement again, and again.

This place is a harbor for the gift of imagination and critical thinking that is the act of creating the world we wish to see, together. To give. To live—in motion.

Scenic De-Construction

The work that happens in the scene shop is mostly construction: the arrangement and connection of disparate materials. But in this workshop, you're invited to de-construct! You will be given an ~object~ constructed with screws, bolts, nails, staples, and the like. Your challenge will be to take it apart, restoring it to the disparate materials it once was. You will be provided with all the tools you'll need: PPE, demonstration/instruction on tool usage, and a patient/safe environment to learn. How FUN!

Travelling over spring break, this Geography course will introduce students to the crucial role that the Himalayas—‘the Roof of the World’—play in the regulation of global climate systems. Further, in the Indian subcontinent, where most of the population is highly dependent on rainfed agriculture, the monsoon and the fluvial systems that delivers much needed water for crop cultivation, is crucially dependent on the Himalayas. The mountains themselves are home to many different cultural groups and diverse flora and fauna that are being threatened by climate change. This course will introduce students to some of the socio-environmental challenges facing the region through a weeklong study abroad component in the foothills of the Himalayas where students will have a chance to experience firsthand some of the issues that they will have read about prior to the visit.

Join the Department of Statistics for a seminar featuring Michael Barón, professor of statistics at American University.

Abstract:

The problem of multiple hypothesis testing often arises in sequential and non-sequential experiments such as clinical trials, change-point detection, acceptance sampling, etc. In such studies, it is necessary to reach a statistical decision for each individual hypothesis instead of combining them and giving one answer to the composite hypothesis.

Fixed-sample methods of multiple comparisons have been well developed. There are Holm, Hommel, Benjamini-Hochberg, Guo-Sarkar, and other methods that can control the familywise error rate (FWER) or the false discovery rate (FDR). We’ll start the talk with elaborating sequential counterparts of these tools. Proposed methods attain simultaneous control of both Type I and Type II FWER, similarly to the sequential probability ratio test of a single hypothesis.

Next, we develop techniques to reduce the expected sample size, and hence, the expected cost, under these FWER constraints. Methods include optimal error spending, weighted statistics, and equalizer rules. Asymptotic optimality is achieved under the Pitman alternative. Substantial cost reduction can be achieved by controlling generalized FWER, which is practical in applications that involve a large number of comparisons.

By introducing asymmetry into the error spending across hypotheses, we justify, formulate, and solve associated minimax optimization problems that result in more efficient error spending strategies. This leads to equalizer rules that minimize the overall risk, cost, or required sample size, while preserving strict control of FWER.

Proposed methods provide an extension of classical procedures, yielding gains in efficiency without compromising statistical accuracy. We illustrate this approach using examples of case studies from clinical trials.

About the Speaker:

Michael Barón is a professor at American University, where he arrived 12 years ago from the University of Texas at Dallas. He conducts research in sequential analysis, change-point detection and multiple testing, with applications in epidemiology, clinical trials, insurance, energy finance and semiconductor manufacturing. This last application brought him to IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, where he was a one-year academic visitor. Barón is credited for extending stepwise multiple hypothesis testing methods to sequential analysis and introducing asymptotically pointwise optimal stopping rules in change-point detection. He also elaborated several classes of sequentially planned statistical procedures. These are flexible group sequential sampling schemes with dynamically determined group sizes that result in substantial time and cost saving, when the cost is nonlinear.

Barón participated in the design and analysis of several clinical trials. He authored a probability and statistics textbook for computer scientists and co-authored a series of books studying applications of statistics in sociology and marketing. M. Barón is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, an elected member of the international Statistical Institute, and a recipient of Abraham Wald award for the best paper in Sequential Analysis.

Barón has a university diploma in mathematics from St. Petersburg State University, Russia, and a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Maryland. In his turn, he graduated 12 doctoral students, all of whom are happily employed, mostly at academic and research positions.

A Gift In Motion loosely draws from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book The Serviceberry which uplifts Indigenous frameworks of the natural world to advance the possibilities in collectivity, reciprocity, and the mindset of abundance. These are anti-capitalist models and theories that provide insight into the systems of power we negotiate, but also offer a lens on how we individually move through our daily lives—together—through historically fraught landscapes. A keen reminder that working with, for, and because of each other remains the most human motivation, even while we are inundated with narratives that suggest otherwise.

Within the walls of the academy, frameworks of artistic and creative knowledge are often dismissed, as are Indigenous methodologies and community-focused perspectives that center human engagement, oral and craft-based practices, and unquantifiable research. A personal experience. A feeling. Abstraction. And yet, for centuries, within the walls of art schools exist myriad economies of imagination that are anchored in the sharing of diverse creative knowledge and articulated in what we make, write, perform, dance, build, conserve, collect, display, speak, and think. We do this all—in small and grand gestures, every day— in service of learning with and for each other in the crafting of the world we wish to see. Perhaps we are articulating the world we already see, even if no one else will.

This showcase brings together the creative, academic, and applied research of the full- and part-time faculty and staff from all seven programs that make up the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design. We—students, staff, and faculty—thrive in the abundance nurtured here, despite the outside world. In a moment when delight and despair are offered in the same breath, we continue to serve as each other’s audiences, toughest critics, and loudest cheerleaders. We ask difficult and sometimes scary questions about our lived experiences, and by default of each other, turning our questions into form and voice and movement again, and again.

This place is a harbor for the gift of imagination and critical thinking that is the act of creating the world we wish to see, together. To give. To live—in motion.

Hira Jaleel and Rebecca Critser will share their scholarship in a mock job interview session. The audience will ask questions and offer thoughts in the mode of a job interview. Her research and scholarship focus on aquaculture law and policy, food law, industrial animal agriculture, and the regulation of emerging markets under U.S. law.Rebecca Critser

Talk Title: Bridging the Gap: A Survey of State Laws that Promote Lab-Based Animal Welfare and Non-Animal ModelsRebecca Critser is an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She works on the Toxicology Policy Program in the Environmental Health & Engineering Department as part of an interdisciplinary team that brings together lawyers and scientists to advocate for the advancement of New Approach Methodologies in order to improve public health and reduce the use of animals in science. She is actively involved in the American Bar Association Tort & Insurance Practice Section as a member of the editorial board of the publication The Brief and co-chairs of the Animal Law Committee’s Science & Technology and Policy & Alliances subcommittees. Rebecca teaches as an adjunct professor at IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law and Lewis & Clark Law School. She is an active member of the George Washington Law School’s Council on Animal Legal Education (CALE) and serves on the boards of the National Council for Research Ethics and Indiana State Bar Association’s Animal Law Section.Moderators

Conley Wouters is an associate professor of law and the director of the Farmed Animal Advocacy Clinic at Vermont Law and Graduate School's Animal Law and Policy Institute. Before joining VLGS, he taught animal law, contracts, and legal writing at the University of Illinois-Chicago School of Law. In addition to issues in industrial animal agriculture, his current research focuses on private security canines. He holds a JD from Cornell Law School and an LLM in Animal Law from the Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis and Clark Law School.

Kathy Hessler is the inaugural Assistant Dean for Animal Legal Education at the George Washington University Law School, and Director of the Animal Legal Education Initiative (ALEI), working with Joan Schaffner and Iselin Gambert, in a program made possible by generous support from ALDF.

Dean Hessler has been a clinical law professor for 30 years and has been teaching animal law for 22 years. She is the first law professor hired to teach animal law full-time. She received her JD from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary and her LLM from Georgetown University Law Center.

Dean Hessler helped develop the Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law School (L&C). For fourteen years, she taught there and directed the Animal Law Clinic, which was named one of the top fifteen most innovative clinics in 2015. She also created and directed the Aquatic Animal Law Initiative and is the co-founder of World Aquatic Animal Day, along with Amy P. Wilson.

As part of the For Freedoms residency with the National Gallery of Art and the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design, visiting artist Cannupa Hanska Luger invites the D.C. community to make beads representing over 500,000 living bison in the form of 36 life-size sculptures. The Bison Bead Project stems from Luger’s Counting Coup social engagement series, which engages collective making to build large-scale collaborations that lend humanity to abstract data and connect us in the process. Corcoran students are hosting bead making workshops to help contribute to this massive project.

A Gift In Motion loosely draws from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book The Serviceberry which uplifts Indigenous frameworks of the natural world to advance the possibilities in collectivity, reciprocity, and the mindset of abundance. These are anti-capitalist models and theories that provide insight into the systems of power we negotiate, but also offer a lens on how we individually move through our daily lives—together—through historically fraught landscapes. A keen reminder that working with, for, and because of each other remains the most human motivation, even while we are inundated with narratives that suggest otherwise.

Within the walls of the academy, frameworks of artistic and creative knowledge are often dismissed, as are Indigenous methodologies and community-focused perspectives that center human engagement, oral and craft-based practices, and unquantifiable research. A personal experience. A feeling. Abstraction. And yet, for centuries, within the walls of art schools exist myriad economies of imagination that are anchored in the sharing of diverse creative knowledge and articulated in what we make, write, perform, dance, build, conserve, collect, display, speak, and think. We do this all—in small and grand gestures, every day— in service of learning with and for each other in the crafting of the world we wish to see. Perhaps we are articulating the world we already see, even if no one else will.

This showcase brings together the creative, academic, and applied research of the full- and part-time faculty and staff from all seven programs that make up the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design. We—students, staff, and faculty—thrive in the abundance nurtured here, despite the outside world. In a moment when delight and despair are offered in the same breath, we continue to serve as each other’s audiences, toughest critics, and loudest cheerleaders. We ask difficult and sometimes scary questions about our lived experiences, and by default of each other, turning our questions into form and voice and movement again, and again.

This place is a harbor for the gift of imagination and critical thinking that is the act of creating the world we wish to see, together. To give. To live—in motion.

In recent essays for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Gause and Dr. Lynch offer competing visions of the future of the Middle East. Dr. Gause, Associate Fellow at the Middle East Institute, argues that despite realignment, regime change, and regional war, the Middle East remains fundamentally unchanged. Dr. Lynch, Professor of Political Science at the George Washington University, forecasts a dramatic end to the American-led regional order. Joining them is Dr. Maloney, the Brookings Institution’s leading voice on U.S. policy toward Iran and the broader Middle East. Dr. Maloney will share her own assessment of the prospects for long-term change.

All are welcome to attend this event hosted by the Middle East Policy Forum and co-sponsored by Foreign Affairs. This event is open to the general public and media.

Speakers:

Dr. F. Gregory Gause III is an Associate Fellow at the Middle East Institute in Washington, DC, and Professor Emeritus of International Affairs at the Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University, from which he retired in January 2025. From fall 2014 through summer 2022 he served as Head of the School’s Department of International Affairs. He is the author of three books and numerous articles on the politics of the Middle East, with a particular focus on the Arabian Peninsula and the Persian Gulf. He was previously on the faculties of the University of Vermont (1995-2014) and Columbia University (1987-1995) and was Fellow for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York (1993-1994). During the 2009-10 academic year he was Kuwait Foundation Visiting Professor of International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. In spring 2009 he was a Fulbright Scholar at the American University in Kuwait. In spring 2010 he was a research fellow at the King Faisal Center for Islamic Studies and Research in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His most recent book is The International Relations of the Persian Gulf (Cambridge University Press, 2010). His articles have appeared in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The Middle East Journal, Security Studies, Washington Quarterly, National Interest, and other journals and edited volumes. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University in 1987 and his A.B. (summa cum laude) from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia in 1980. He studied Arabic at the American University in Cairo (1982-83) and Middlebury College (1984).

Professor Marc Lynch received his B.A. in Political Science from Duke University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University. He teaches courses on Middle Eastern politics and international relations. He is the director of the Project on Middle East Political Science and co-director of the Program on African Social Research, and editor of the Columbia University Press series Columbia Studies on Middle East Politics. He is the author of The New Arab Wars: Uprisings and Anarchy in the Middle East and a co-editor of The One State Reality: What Is Israel/Palestine?

Dr. Suzanne Maloney is the vice president and director of the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution, where her research focuses on Iran and Persian Gulf energy. Prior to being named vice president and director, she served as the deputy director of Foreign Policy for five years. At Brookings, she is a leading voice on U.S. policy toward Iran and the broader Middle East, testifying before Congress, briefing policymakers, and engaging with government, non-profit organizations and corporations. Maloney also serves on the External Research Council for the National Intelligence Council and is a frequent commentator in national and international media. Maloney has advised both Democratic and Republican administrations on Iran policy, including as an external advisor to senior State Department officials during the Obama administration and as a member of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s Policy Planning staff. Earlier in her career, she served as Middle East advisor for ExxonMobil Corporation, where she was responsible for government relations related to all corporate activities in the region. She has authored or edited three books on Iran: “The Iranian Revolution at 40” (Brookings Institution Press, 2020), “Iran’s Political Economy since the Revolution” (Cambridge University Press, 2015), and “Iran’s Long Reach” (United States Institute of Peace, 2008). Maloney has also published numerous book chapters and articles in a variety of academic and policy journals as well as news media such as the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and Foreign Affairs. In 2004, she directed and authored the Council on Foreign Relations Task Force on US policy toward Iran, chaired by former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Maloney received a doctoral degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and studied in Tehran as part of the first academic exchanges between the United States and Iran since the 1979 revolution.

Justin Vogt joined Foreign Affairs in 2011 after previously serving as managing editor of World Policy Journal. Earlier, he was a research editor and fact-checker at The New Yorker and an associate producer on documentary films for the PBS series Frontline. His writing has been published by The New York Times, The New Yorker, and many other outlets.

About the Event

Women’s cinema encompasses female-led films or narratives that focus on women’s experiences. It also includes films that target female audiences. As We Like It is an important milestone for Taiwanese women’s cinema. Shot on the heels of the 2019 legalization of same-sex marriage in Taiwan, As We Like It envisions a post-gender future. Taiwan was the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, initiating a new mode of coalition politics.

The all-female cast does away with such binary gender accessories as mustaches or wigs. It presents characters of all genders (played by actors identifying as women) matter-of-factly without apology or additional justification. Thematizing mixed-race and transgender practices, the queer film (in Mandarin, Taiwanese, and French) presents gender as a translational practice.

Gender becomes legible or illegible in new ways when translated into different languages. It is commonly assumed that some ideas are lost in translation. We can instead think of transness and translation as a concept through which embodied experiences evolve into social signs for interpretation.

Travelling over spring break, this SMPA documentary-production course trains students to research, report, and produce short-form, research-driven documentaries on the linked themes of climate change, ocean and marine conservation, coastal erosion, and the cultural heritage of Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. By reporting on climate change, marine conservation, and coastal erosion at the sites where these forces are visible and lived, students confront the ethical and logistical realities of cross-cultural storytelling firsthand, build intercultural competence alongside production skill, and return with a completed film that is both a portfolio piece and evidence of what they can do when the stakes are real.

# Breaking Bread: The Politics of Complexion

### *When Color Becomes Currency: Exploring Colorism & Status Across Cultures*

What happens when the shade of your skin shapes how the world sees, values, and treats you?

Join the Multicultural Student Services Center for Breaking Bread: The Politics of Complexion, an interactive conversation exploring colorism and the ways privilege, bias, and social value can be attached to skin tone within and across racial and ethnic communities.

Together, we’ll examine how complexion can influence media representation, social class, professional opportunities, leadership, power, and institutional treatment. We’ll also explore how colorism operates differently across cultures and communities and how histories of colonialism, racism, and social hierarchy continue to shape perceptions of lighter and darker complexions.

Through conversation and reflection, we’ll ask: Who is perceived as professional, intelligent, trustworthy, or powerful, and how can complexion influence those perceptions? How do skin tone hierarchies become embedded within communities and institutions, and how can we begin to challenge them?

No expertise required. Just come ready to listen, reflect, and engage in meaningful conversation over food.

Speakers:

Dr. Hossam el-Hamalawy, is an Egyptian journalist and scholar-activist based in Germany. His work focuses on Egypt’s military, security services, political economy, and counterrevolution. Dr. El-Hamalawy publishes State & Barracks, a weekly newsletter examining the nexus of military power, money, and the state in Egypt. It features reporting, analysis, and military history, usually published twice a week.

Dr. Maher Hamoud is a lecturer and researcher in Political Economy of Development. He received his PhD in Political Sciences at Ghent University in 2017, Department of Conflict and Development Studies, where he also held a postdoctoral position until January 2022. He received his MA in Economic Development at the American University in Cairo in 2009. He was also the editor-in-chief of the Cairo-based Daily News Egypt. Within the domain of political economy of development, his current research focuses on the intersectionality between development politics, value chains, industrialisation, and international trade with and within the Global South.

Dr. Waleed Salem is the Simons Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow at Simon Frasier University. Dr. Salem's work engages two areas of scholarship: law, lawyers, and political change, and oil politics in the Arabic-speaking Gulf states. In his previous life as a journalist, Waleed, under pen-name Waleed Al-Shobakky, reported for years on developments in higher education and science policy in Arab Gulf states, especially Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar (where he lived for about seven years). The pieces that came out of that period were published in Nature, The New Atlantis, The Science and Development Network (SciDev.net), ScienceBusiness.com, and AlJazeera.net, among others. He hails from an ancient civilization that had a profound fascination with triangular structures.

Dr. Shana Marshall is Associate Director of the Institute for Middle East Studies and Assistant Research Professor of International Affairs. She is a non-resident fellow at the Quincy Institute, a member of the Forum on the Arms Trade network and co-leads the working group on Transnational War Economies with the Security in Context project. Dr. Marshall earned her PhD from the University of Maryland-College Park, and prior to joining GW held fellowships at The Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University and the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance at Princeton University.

Fight Nice: Stage Combat

Stage Combat is a specialized form of movement training, as well as an acting discipline, that utilizes a wide array of technical skills. In this workshop, “Fight Nice,” we will focus on learning several core techniques common to many stage fights as well as the philosophies and terminology behind them. We will gain an understanding of falling down, getting up, masking, cues, knaps, the silver thread, “CRAP” and the commonalities these things all share; Safety and Story.

Queer AF Ballet

Queer AF Ballet reimagines traditional ballet as an inclusive, empowering space centered on personal expression, authenticity, and bodily agency. Scenic De-Construction
with Becca Bolton

The work that happens in the scene shop is mostly construction: the arrangement and connection of disparate materials. But in this workshop, you're invited to de-construct! You will be given an ~object~ constructed with screws, bolts, nails, staples, and the like. Your challenge will be to take it apart, restoring it to the disparate materials it once was. You will be provided with all the tools you'll need: PPE, demonstration/instruction on tool usage, and a patient/safe environment to learn. How FUN!

Audition

Preparing for open calls, season calls, and graduate programs begins with strong preparation. The first half of this workshop, facilitated by Beckham, focuses on selecting material and brainstorming monologues—exploring what makes a good audition piece, how many you need, and where to find them. The second half, facilitated by Drake, focuses on preparing for a dance audition call. Bring any audition-related questions to leave with a clear to-do list for summer work, grad school auditions, and more.

A Gift In Motion loosely draws from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book The Serviceberry which uplifts Indigenous frameworks of the natural world to advance the possibilities in collectivity, reciprocity, and the mindset of abundance. These are anti-capitalist models and theories that provide insight into the systems of power we negotiate, but also offer a lens on how we individually move through our daily lives—together—through historically fraught landscapes. A keen reminder that working with, for, and because of each other remains the most human motivation, even while we are inundated with narratives that suggest otherwise.

Within the walls of the academy, frameworks of artistic and creative knowledge are often dismissed, as are Indigenous methodologies and community-focused perspectives that center human engagement, oral and craft-based practices, and unquantifiable research. A personal experience. A feeling. Abstraction. And yet, for centuries, within the walls of art schools exist myriad economies of imagination that are anchored in the sharing of diverse creative knowledge and articulated in what we make, write, perform, dance, build, conserve, collect, display, speak, and think. We do this all—in small and grand gestures, every day— in service of learning with and for each other in the crafting of the world we wish to see. Perhaps we are articulating the world we already see, even if no one else will.

This showcase brings together the creative, academic, and applied research of the full- and part-time faculty and staff from all seven programs that make up the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design. We—students, staff, and faculty—thrive in the abundance nurtured here, despite the outside world. In a moment when delight and despair are offered in the same breath, we continue to serve as each other’s audiences, toughest critics, and loudest cheerleaders. We ask difficult and sometimes scary questions about our lived experiences, and by default of each other, turning our questions into form and voice and movement again, and again.

This place is a harbor for the gift of imagination and critical thinking that is the act of creating the world we wish to see, together. To give. To live—in motion.

The Multiracial Democracy Project and the GW Center for Law & Technology: The Bernard Center, along with the Center for Democracy & Technology, are co-hosting a half-day symposium that will examine the capabilities and limitations of multilingual large language models; how these technologies affect civil rights, opportunity, and dignity; and the policy and governance approaches needed to support a multilingual and multiracial democracy.

The symposium will feature two moderated panel discussions with experts from academia, civil society, and government. The discussions will examine the technical and policy challenges to achieving language equity, as well as the real-world experiences of speakers of different languages and the barriers they encounter when using multilingual AI technologies.

Travelling over spring break, this SMPA documentary-production course trains students to research, report, and produce short-form, research-driven documentaries on the linked themes of climate change, ocean and marine conservation, coastal erosion, and the cultural heritage of Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. By reporting on climate change, marine conservation, and coastal erosion at the sites where these forces are visible and lived, students confront the ethical and logistical realities of cross-cultural storytelling firsthand, build intercultural competence alongside production skill, and return with a completed film that is both a portfolio piece and evidence of what they can do when the stakes are real.

As part of the For Freedoms residency with the National Gallery of Art and the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design, visiting artist Cannupa Hanska Luger invites the D.C. community to make beads representing over 500,000 living bison in the form of 36 life-size sculptures. The Bison Bead Project stems from Luger’s Counting Coup social engagement series, which engages collective making to build large-scale collaborations that lend humanity to abstract data and connect us in the process. Corcoran students are hosting bead making workshops to help contribute to this massive project.

CCAS Short-Term Abroad Programs (STAP) present a unique way to complete coursework while traveling abroad. Travelling over spring break, this Geography course will introduce students to the “superdiverse” city of Brussels. The city of Brussels offers students direct access to policymakers and scholars of immigration, community organizations, and migrant communities, allowing them to examine how migration shapes urban life, social integration, housing, labor markets, and public policy in a contemporary European context. Students will have a chance to experience firsthand some of the immigration-related issues in Brussels that they will have read about prior to the visit through workshops, talks, visits to museums and field research in the city.

The STEM-designated Data Science Program at GW's Columbian College of Arts and Sciences prepares students to meet that need and enter competitive careers in government, technology, private industry and much more.

Data science experts learn how to make sense of massive data sets, and they use that information to improve the way we live, work and communicate. This workshop will discuss sources and uses of realtime data, and walk through one strategy of setting up a realtime data collection pipeline utilizing AWS, Terraform, and Python. Some programming experience (including working with command line interfaces and Python) is expected for following along, but is not required for attendance.

If you would like to follow along in the workshop, please install Terraform on your operating system and register for a free-tier AWS account.

A Gift In Motion loosely draws from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book The Serviceberry which uplifts Indigenous frameworks of the natural world to advance the possibilities in collectivity, reciprocity, and the mindset of abundance. These are anti-capitalist models and theories that provide insight into the systems of power we negotiate, but also offer a lens on how we individually move through our daily lives—together—through historically fraught landscapes. A keen reminder that working with, for, and because of each other remains the most human motivation, even while we are inundated with narratives that suggest otherwise.

Within the walls of the academy, frameworks of artistic and creative knowledge are often dismissed, as are Indigenous methodologies and community-focused perspectives that center human engagement, oral and craft-based practices, and unquantifiable research. A personal experience. A feeling. Abstraction. And yet, for centuries, within the walls of art schools exist myriad economies of imagination that are anchored in the sharing of diverse creative knowledge and articulated in what we make, write, perform, dance, build, conserve, collect, display, speak, and think. We do this all—in small and grand gestures, every day— in service of learning with and for each other in the crafting of the world we wish to see. Perhaps we are articulating the world we already see, even if no one else will.

This showcase brings together the creative, academic, and applied research of the full- and part-time faculty and staff from all seven programs that make up the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design. We—students, staff, and faculty—thrive in the abundance nurtured here, despite the outside world. In a moment when delight and despair are offered in the same breath, we continue to serve as each other’s audiences, toughest critics, and loudest cheerleaders. We ask difficult and sometimes scary questions about our lived experiences, and by default of each other, turning our questions into form and voice and movement again, and again.

This place is a harbor for the gift of imagination and critical thinking that is the act of creating the world we wish to see, together. To give. To live—in motion.

Fight Nice: Stage Combat

Stage Combat is a specialized form of movement training, as well as an acting discipline, that utilizes a wide array of technical skills. In this workshop, “Fight Nice,” we will focus on learning several core techniques common to many stage fights as well as the philosophies and terminology behind them. We will gain an understanding of falling down, getting up, masking, cues, knaps, the silver thread, “CRAP” and the commonalities these things all share; Safety and Story.

Queer AF Ballet

Queer AF Ballet reimagines traditional ballet as an inclusive, empowering space centered on personal expression, authenticity, and bodily agency. Set to music by queer icons, the class combines traditional ballet technique with improvisation to build alignment, musicality, and confidence while expanding what ballet can look and feel like. Open to all experience levels, this course prioritizes curiosity, self-definition, and creative exploration in an open, welcoming environment.

Scenic De-Construction
with Becca Bolton

The work that happens in the scene shop is mostly construction: the arrangement and connection of disparate materials. But in this workshop, you're invited to de-construct! You will be given an ~object~ constructed with screws, bolts, nails, staples, and the like. Your challenge will be to take it apart, restoring it to the disparate materials it once was. You will be provided with all the tools you'll need: PPE, demonstration/instruction on tool usage, and a patient/safe environment to learn. How FUN!

Preparing for open calls, season calls, and graduate programs begins with strong preparation. The first half of this workshop, facilitated by Beckham, focuses on selecting material and brainstorming monologues—exploring what makes a good audition piece, how many you need, and where to find them. The second half, facilitated by Drake, focuses on preparing for a dance audition call. Bring any audition-related questions to leave with a clear to-do list for summer work, grad school auditions, and more.

About Dr. Chet’la Sebree

A poet and essayist from the Mid-Atlantic‚ Chet’la Sebree is the author of the debut essay collection Turn (W)here: A Geography of Home. She is also the author of three poetry collections: Blue Opening (Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist‚ Lambda Literary Bisexual Poetry Award finalist‚ and longlisted for the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry Collection); Field Study (winner of the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets); and Mistress (New Issues Poetry Prize Winner and NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work-Poetry finalist). She is an associate professor of English at the George Washington University.

Common Grounds is a relaxed gathering where faculty‚ staff‚ students‚ and alumni come together to share ideas‚ reflect on important issues‚ and deepen connections across CCAS. Through open dialogue and thoughtful conversation‚ the series aims to cultivate a stronger sense of belonging while highlighting the experiences and perspectives of the many communities that make up our college.

Tonic Talk is a faculty lecture series styled after the popular pints with profs event‚ offering alumnni and community members the opportunity to enage with GW faculty in meaningful discussion on timely topics.

​At Civic Hack DC 2025, technologists, policy experts, designers, data practitioners, and civic-minded volunteers explored what could be built with federal regulatory comment data.

​Now we’re taking the next step: from prototype to production.

​Part 2 will build on SpicyRegs and the original Civic Hack DC 2025 problem statements to create production-level open-source MVP tools for making public comments easier to search, analyze, understand, and act on.

​This time, we’re focused on tools that can continue beyond demo day.

​What Makes Part 2 Different

​Part 1 was about exploring what is possible.

​Part 2 is about building what can actually be used.

​We are organizing teams around real work groups, judges, advisors, and product-owner partners who can help define needs, validate assumptions, and guide teams toward practical tools.

​Together, teams will ask:

​Who is this tool for?​What workflow does it support?​What would make it trustworthy enough to use?​What is the smallest useful version we can ship?​What should continue after the hackathon?

​Judging and feedback will focus on usefulness, feasibility, accessibility, trust, documentation, and potential for real-world impact.

A Gift In Motion loosely draws from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book The Serviceberry which uplifts Indigenous frameworks of the natural world to advance the possibilities in collectivity, reciprocity, and the mindset of abundance. These are anti-capitalist models and theories that provide insight into the systems of power we negotiate, but also offer a lens on how we individually move through our daily lives—together—through historically fraught landscapes. A keen reminder that working with, for, and because of each other remains the most human motivation, even while we are inundated with narratives that suggest otherwise.

Within the walls of the academy, frameworks of artistic and creative knowledge are often dismissed, as are Indigenous methodologies and community-focused perspectives that center human engagement, oral and craft-based practices, and unquantifiable research. A personal experience. A feeling. Abstraction. And yet, for centuries, within the walls of art schools exist myriad economies of imagination that are anchored in the sharing of diverse creative knowledge and articulated in what we make, write, perform, dance, build, conserve, collect, display, speak, and think. We do this all—in small and grand gestures, every day— in service of learning with and for each other in the crafting of the world we wish to see. Perhaps we are articulating the world we already see, even if no one else will.

This showcase brings together the creative, academic, and applied research of the full- and part-time faculty and staff from all seven programs that make up the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design. We—students, staff, and faculty—thrive in the abundance nurtured here, despite the outside world. In a moment when delight and despair are offered in the same breath, we continue to serve as each other’s audiences, toughest critics, and loudest cheerleaders. We ask difficult and sometimes scary questions about our lived experiences, and by default of each other, turning our questions into form and voice and movement again, and again.

This place is a harbor for the gift of imagination and critical thinking that is the act of creating the world we wish to see, together. To give. To live—in motion.

Abstract

A trademark is, by definition, an identifier of source. Congress created the Lanham Act to capture the dual objectives of trademark law, by which the owner of a mark is protected against unfair competition, while consumers are simultaneously protected against confusion, mistake, and deceit. The United States Supreme Court has affirmed these rights in the crucial balance between the power and authority of Congress under the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution and the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment. Both Congress and the Supreme Court have indicated that whether a term is considered to be an identifier of source—and thus a protectable mark—is determined by the perceptions of the relevant consumer. Surprisingly however, courts have held that consumers cannot make this crucial determination on the distinctiveness of a mark if the courts decide that a mark—however well-known or well-liked—is generic.

In short, the customer is always right, except when the courts disagree. This is legally troubling, since U.S. courts, unlike their international counterparts, have indicated that a finding of genericness renders a mark fatally unprotectable. It is also logistically problematic since, as this article demonstrates, courts themselves are not clear on how to go about the crucial determination that can leave a mark designated as fatally generic. With confusion as to which of the overlapping distinctiveness tests may apply, how the burden of proof may be set, and whether any particular outcome may result, courts have inadvertently created a blurry realm of what is, effectively—generic-ish.

Importantly, there are trillions of dollars at stake in the branding of goods and services, and a commensurate need for fairness and predictability in line with the constitutional balance of rights reflected in the Lanham Act and in Supreme Court jurisprudence. This article provides a unique and much-needed critical analysis of conceptual strength as a determinant of trademark protectability. With empirical substantiation from data and cases along with analogies to the high burden accorded by the Supreme Court and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure to extinguish other litigated rights, the article sets forth three very useful proposals—including the appropriate inquiries for courts and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to invoke in determining whether a term is generic, merely descriptive, or on a flowing spectrum between.

This session will feature general principles of authorship and publication while distinguishing between disciplines and noting specific journal guidelines, including responsible use of AI. It will also cover peer review, noting different kinds of peer review and the processes involved, including the role of the peer reviewer, maintenance of confidentiality and security, responsible use of AI, and political considerations.

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) sessions are open to faculty, postdocs, students, and staff at GW, Children’s National, and academic institutions in the D.C. region. They are offered by OVPR’s Office of Research Integrity and Compliance.

These interactive sessions are designed to meet federal guidelines and will include faculty-led presentations, real-world case studies and facilitated discussions on key RCR topics.

CCAS Short-Term Abroad Programs (STAP) present a unique way to complete coursework while traveling abroad. Travelling over spring break, this Geography course will introduce students to the “superdiverse” city of Brussels. The city of Brussels offers students direct access to policymakers and scholars of immigration, community organizations, and migrant communities, allowing them to examine how migration shapes urban life, social integration, housing, labor markets, and public policy in a contemporary European context. Students will have a chance to experience firsthand some of the immigration-related issues in Brussels that they will have read about prior to the visit through workshops, talks, visits to museums and field research in the city.

Travelling over spring break, this Geography course will introduce students to the crucial role that the Himalayas—‘the Roof of the World’—play in the regulation of global climate systems. Further, in the Indian subcontinent, where most of the population is highly dependent on rainfed agriculture, the monsoon and the fluvial systems that delivers much needed water for crop cultivation, is crucially dependent on the Himalayas. The mountains themselves are home to many different cultural groups and diverse flora and fauna that are being threatened by climate change. This course will introduce students to some of the socio-environmental challenges facing the region through a weeklong study abroad component in the foothills of the Himalayas where students will have a chance to experience firsthand some of the issues that they will have read about prior to the visit.
