DESCRIPTION:Join the CCAS Department of Physics for an event featuring Heat
her Lewandowski\, professor and associate chair of engineering physics at t
he University of Colorado\, Boulder.\n\nParticipation in undergraduate rese
arch experiences (UREs) has been identified as an important way of increasi
ng undergraduate retention\, interest and identity within the sciences. Cou
rse-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) have been shown to hav
e similar outcomes to UREs\, but can reach a larger number of students at o
ne time and are accessible to any student simply through enrollment in a co
urse. One key component of a CURE is that students must participate in auth
entic scientific discovery in which they answer a question where the answer
is initially unknown to both students and the scientific community.\n\nThi
s talk will present student experiences with authentic research in the firs
t large-enrollment\, introductory physics CURE conducted remotely during th
 e COVID-19 pandemic.
