2/12, Thursday – 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Description
Led by artist George Moton, the session will center on the Study Heads of The Shaw 54th Regiment Memorial by Augustus Saint-Gaudens as an overarching topic. Students will draw directly from the 3D printed study heads derived from the original sculptures and resized for the reproduction. Working from these replicas allows students to confront the nuanced rendering of Black physiognomy in one of the most significant commemorative works in American art. The heads assert individuality, presence, and dignity, foregrounding the lived identities of Black soldiers whose contributions have often been overlooked in official histories.
Students will develop the skills to translate 3D form into 2D analysis, understanding classical draftsmanship disciplines that anchor George’s studio practice. The workshop will also highlight the strength and limitation of 3D printing as a tool for access, preservation, and reinterpretation, deepening the study of historic sculpture while reframing agency, memory, and representation.
The workshop is free with registration required. Please note that each session will be open to up to 10 students due to the limited capacity of the Corcoran. Sign-ups will be based on a first-come, first-served basis.
