DESCRIPTION:Music Theory Mod n\n\nAbstract: \n\nWhat does abstract algebra
sound like? \n\nIn this talk from Anthony Christiana\, graduate student i
n the GW Department of Mathematics\, we will translate between music-theor
etic concepts and mathematical ones. In one direction\, we will transform
functions\, sequences\, and sets into pitch\, rhythm\, and harmony to make
music from mathematical abstraction. Translating back\, we can also descr
ibe important concepts from music history – for instance\, 12-tone seria
lism – in terms natural to a mathematician. We'll explore modular arithm
 etic\, group theory\, random number generation\, syncopation\, harmony\, (
a)tonality\, and more on this expedition through the intersection of numbe
rs and sounds.\n\nNo prior knowledge of abstract algebra nor music theory
is expected.\n\nThe lecture will be followed by an hour-long panel discuss
ion on careers and graduate programs in mathematical sciences. Refreshment
 s will be served.
