On April 23rd, 6:30 - 8:00 ET, University Student Center 3rd floor Amphitheater, 800 21st NW, Washington DC the Onero Institute China Program is pleased to present Conversations with Singapore Ambassador Lui Tuck Yew - Singapore, Southeast Asia, and Beyond.
At this event, GWU's own Professor Robert Sutter, an Asian studies expert with over 30 years of experience studying the region on for the Congressional Research Service and other government agencies, engage with Singapore Ambassador to the U.S. Lui Tuck Yew who has also served as ambassador to Japan and the People's Republic of China.
The first hour of the event will be dedicated to addressing the topics of U.S.- Singapore relations, U.S. engagement in Southeast Asia, and U.S.-China relations. For the final thirty minutes, we will have a student-led audience Q&A session.
Further Information on Ambassador Lui:
- Mr Lui Tuck Yew has been appointed as Singapore’s Ambassador to the United States of America in June 2023.
- Mr Lui Tuck Yew was Singapore’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China from November 2019 to April 2023. Prior to this, he was Singapore’s Ambassador to Japan from June 2017 to October 2019.
- Mr Lui was the Minister for Transport from 2011 to 2015 and concurrently Second Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2011 to 2012 and Second Minister for Defence in 2015. Mr Lui was Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts from 2009 to 2011. He was first elected as Member of Parliament in 2006 and served as a Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts until 2009.
- Mr Lui was a Singapore Armed Forces (Overseas) scholar and served in the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), rising to the position of Chief of Navy in 1999.
- Mr Lui was appointed Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore in 2003 and concurrently Deputy Secretary (Land), Ministry of Transport. He joined the Housing and Development Board (HDB) as Chief Executive Officer in 2005.
- Mr Lui graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from University of Cambridge, Trinity College United Kingdom in 1983. He subsequently obtained a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations from Tufts University, USA in 1994.
- Mr Lui was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) (Military) in 1993, the Public Administration Medal (Gold) (Military) in 2000, and the Long Service Medal in 2005.
