DESCRIPTION:Join representatives from the GW Department of Chemistry online
for a discussion about how our graduate programs can take your career to
the next level. Learn about the admission requirements\, courses required
and career outcomes.\n\nAbout the Programs\n\nThe MS in Chemistry degree p
repares students for careers at research universities\, government and int
elligence agencies and companies all over the world. The degree can also b
e a valuable stepping stone to a PhD in chemistry or medical school. Possi
ble research areas include proteomics and bioanalytical methods developmen
t\, synthetic medicinal chemistry and drug design\, combustion\, battery c
hemistry and renewable energy sources\, laser and molecular spectroscopies
\, nanomaterials and biomaterials\, modeling\, coordination chemistry and
novel inorganic framework structures.\n\nThe PhD in Chemistry program offe
rs a small student-to-faculty ratio\, close access to research and mentors
hip opportunities and a vibrant community of 40–50 peers. Faculty are de
eply invested in helping PhD students develop their professional portfolio
s\, offering ample opportunities for research presentations\, publications
and awards. In addition to research in their focus area of choice\, many
students enrich their program through consortium classes or collaborations
with peers in medicine\, engineering and nearby federal research laborato
ries — including the National Institutes of Health\, Naval Research Labo
ratory and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.\n\nThe uniq
ue MS in Environmental & Green Chemistry teaches students the science unde
rlying today’s environmental challenges and how to develop innovative\,
greener solutions to address them. Because of the department's green chemi
stry capstone internship program\, our graduates are strong candidates for
positions in the private sector\, government agencies and NGOs as environ
mental and sustainability consultants\, health professionals\, product dev
 elopers\, engineers and patent lawyers.
