You’re Invited to a Seminar: COVID-19 Data and Information

Featuring Guest Speaker: Dr. Michael A. Stoto, Professorial Lecturer in Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at The George Washington University, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Health Management and Policy, School of Health, Georgetown University, Adjunct Professor of Biostatistics at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health

Policymakers and the public can be misled about the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact of control strategies. Most of what we know about the pandemic – from current transmission levels to the effectiveness of control strategies – is based on reported cases or deaths. Epidemiologists and biostatisticians know these counts are incomplete, but analysts often assume that the reported numbers were a constant fraction of actual COVID-19 infections or deaths. Thus, Dr. Stoto will also show why much of what we “know” about the current situation and effectiveness of control strategies can be wrong; what improvements are needed to overcome these problems: and how surveillance must be expanded from simply tracking cases and deaths to providing the “epidemic intelligence” needed to inform public health policies that respond to community needs and concerns.
