DESCRIPTION:You’re Invited to a Seminar: COVID-19 Data and Information\n\
n \n\nFeaturing Guest Speaker: Dr. Michael A. Stoto\, Professorial Lecture
r in Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at The George Washington University\
, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Health Management and Policy\, S
chool of Health\, Georgetown University\, Adjunct Professor of Biostatisti
cs at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health\n\n \n\nPolicymakers
and the public can be misled about the current status of the COVID-19 pand
emic and the impact of control strategies. Most of what we know about the
pandemic – from current transmission levels to the effectiveness of cont
rol strategies – is based on reported cases or deaths. Epidemiologists a
nd biostatisticians know these counts are incomplete\, but analysts often
assume that the reported numbers were a constant fraction of actual COVID-
19 infections or deaths. Thus\, Dr. Stoto will also show why much of what
we “know” about the current situation and effectiveness of control str
ategies can be wrong\; what improvements are needed to overcome these prob
lems: and how surveillance must be expanded from simply tracking cases and
deaths to providing the “epidemic intelligence” needed to inform publ
ic health policies that respond to community needs and concerns. Thursday\
