In this 2-day, hands-on workshop, participants will learn essential skills for working with metagenomics data, including:

  • Structuring your metadata, organize and document your genomics data and bioinformatics workflow, and access data on the NCBI sequence read archive (SRA) database.
  • Working at the command line to navigate your file system, create, copy, move, and remove files and directories, and automate repetitive tasks using scripts and wildcards.
  • Using command-line tools to perform quality control, assemble a metagenome, perform metagenomic binning, assess quality, perform taxonomic assignment to sequences, visualize taxonomic abundance,
  • Working with Amazon AWS cloud computing and how to transfer data between your local computer and cloud resources.
  • A quick introduction to programming in R, including R basics, data wrangling, data analysis, and data visualization, in order to analyze and visualize metagenomics data.

As a prerequisite, learners are expected to have some familiarity with biological concepts, such as DNA sequences and bacterial diversity.

Space is limited and participants are expected to attend both sessions:

Wednesday, August 20 from 9am-5pm
Thursday, August 21 from 9am-5pm

This workshop is part of the Using Programming and Code for Research series for anyone who wants to get started or learn more about use programming languages like Python, R, or other applications. These tools can help you to collect, manipulate, clean, analyze, and visualize research data or automate many repetitive tasks. If you need personalized assistance with a data analysis, programming, or coding project, consider booking a consultation with one of our librarian-experts. Learn more about our services for programming and coding and for working with data.

All sessions are free to GW students, faculty, and staff. GW has an institutional commitment to ensuring that all of our programs and events are accessible for all individuals.
