How might we effectively utilize design tools while honoring and amplifying the lived experiences of those we serve? This question was at the heart of the Fall 2024 Interaction Design course on Systems Thinking and Human-Centered Design. Students explored traditional human-centered design (HCD) techniques alongside their critiques, ultimately developing tools that reflected their unique perspectives on inclusive design practice. Through hands-on experience with interviews, workshop facilitation, qualitative research, and prototyping, students examined each phase of the human-centered design process. The course challenged students to reimagine design methodologies while decentering themselves in the creative process, encouraging a more equitable approach to design practice.
Join Kate Sullivan Frades, Devika Menon, and Ariana Mayeri, as they discuss their perspectives, challenges, and approaches to applying design in their work, what they are most concerned about, and how they use human-centered design as a tool.
