This panel discusses the role of technology and digital literacy in the protection and empowerment of women in South Asian countries such as India and Afghanistan. For example, As the Taliban continues to restrict the free movement of women and girls in Afghanistan, civil society actors are organizing protests through social media. Campaigns such as #FreeHerFace and street protests in provinces throughout the country have been driven by digital literacy. To combat the threat of digital suppression by the Taliban, and other oppressive actors, women, girls, and their male allies can advance their cause through technological innovations and safe social media usage.
