The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the University Writing Program invite GW faculty to kick off 2024 with three days of structured writing and research activities. Facilitated by Danika Myers, teaching assistant professor of writing, this retreat provides time to work on writing projects in progress, time to plan or begin new projects, and opportunities to share your writing and research with colleagues from across the university.

Scholars and researchers are invited to bring writing projects of any genre and at any stage. At last summer’s retreat, participants worked on journal articles, conference presentations, book proposals, book outlines, book chapters, grant proposals, literature reviews, creative projects, and more!

Faculty are welcome to attend as many or as few of the retreat days as their schedule allows. The retreat is structured around blocks of individual writing time, with daily guided goal setting, check-ins, and reflection. There will also be daily opportunities for:

  • Breakout sessions for peer feedback, problem solving, and discussion of works-in-progress
  • 1-on-1 coaching sessions with the facilitator
  • Development of productive writing habits
  • Discussions of writing and research with faculty from across the university

Faculty feedback on the last writing retreat:

  • “I made enormous progress in defining my project: I developed my research questions, devised a method for creating my corpus (something no one has attempted before, to my knowledge at least), and used it to select the texts. I had expected this to take a month.”
  • “I did complete two projects that had been lingering over my head for several weeks: a book review for a leading journal in my field, and a manuscript proposal review for a leading publisher in my field. I submitted both during the writing workshop time! In short, having the forced time to sit there allowed me to finish these two tasks, along with other things!”
  • “After each of the retreat days, I felt reinvigorated from the support, companionship, and all the work I'd gotten done.”
  • It was a huge help, and I even met some potential future collaborators in other departments. It was a very supportive, productive space and community.”
