Israel and Lebanon exist in a legal, and often actual, state of war. Since 1949, the Israeli and Lebanese governments have reached only two genuine bilateral diplomatic agreements. Amos Hochstein, former Senior Advisor to President Biden, served as mediator for both of these breakthroughs: The 2022 agreement delineating the countries’ maritime border, and the November 2024 cease-fire that ended a year of war between Israel and Hezbollah. On April 7th, he will share insights from shuttle diplomacy between Beirut and Jerusalem, in a conversation with the Elliott School’s Ned Lazarus.

About the Speaker:

Amos Hochstein served as the White House Senior Advisor to President Biden for Energy and Investment and Deputy Assistant to the President. Amos previously served at the State Department as the Special Presidential Coordinator for Global Infrastructure and Energy Security. Amos has also held the position of Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State for Global Energy Security. He began his tenure with the State Department in 2011, when he was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Diplomacy. From 2014 to 2017, he served as Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs and led the Bureau of Energy Resources.

Sponsored by the GW Elliott School of International Affairs and the Israel Institute.

Light lunch will be provided.
