Evie Downie in Front of a Microscope

Speaker: Evangeline Downie, the Associate Dean for Research and Special Initiatives in CCAS and the Leader of Research Administration POD 1, is an experimental nuclear physicist with experiments at MAMI in Mainz, Germany and the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, collaborating with a diverse team of physicists from many counties and career stages.

Join us for a Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) fireside chat on handling unexpected situations in a research setting. Learn how to respond when something unexpected happens; What resources are available to help you deal with an emergency or emerging need in your research? (University offices & resources, post-award support administrators, ISO, OVPR etc...); How do we minimize the risks of emergencies? (Following proper ISO protocols, proactive mentorship (discussing challenges before they become emergencies, knowing the rules around graduation etc), starting IRB applications early, regularly reviewing study status, planning for funding etc...), understanding the culture and power dynamics of your collaborators / group. Emphasize that making time for routine protocol reviews and check-ins helps mitigate the emergencies that take up much more time.
