At a time of intensifying global conflict, journalists find themselves under a number of constraints as they attempt to fulfill their democratic role in society and tell the truth. Yet reporting does not occur in a vacuum. Newsrooms operate within institutional pressures, editorial constraints, audience expectations, and in an increasingly fractured media ecosystem.

Hosted by the Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication, this panel convenes journalists working across a number of networks to examine the ethical and practical realities of reporting on conflict and political violence. Moving beyond abstract debates about “objectivity,” the discussion will explore how narratives are constructed and contested – and how journalism can ideally serve the public and potentially contribute to peaceful outcomes.
