New for this retreat! Optional breakout sessions on publishing and grant writing will be offered on Thursday, August 1, 2024 from 3:00–5:00 p.m.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the University Writing Program invite GW faculty to maintain momentum on summer writing and research activities by joining another of our popular three-day writing retreats. Facilitated by Danika Myers and Jessica McCaughey, both from the University Writing Program, this retreat provides time to work on writing projects in progress, time to plan or begin new projects, and opportunities to share your writing and research with colleagues from across the university.

Scholars and researchers are invited to bring writing projects of any genre and at any stage. At previous retreats, participants worked on journal articles, conference presentations, book proposals, book outlines, book chapters, grant proposals, literature reviews, creative projects, and more!

The retreat is structured around blocks of individual writing time, with daily guided goal setting, check-ins, and reflection. There will also be daily opportunities for:

  • breakout sessions for peer feedback, problem-solving, and discussion of works-in-progress;
  • 1-on-1 coaching sessions with a facilitator;
  • learning and developing productive writing habits; and
  • discussing writing and research with faculty from across the university during meals.

In addition to long blocks of time for focused individual writing and research that are the cornerstone of these retreats, participants may opt to join one of two concurrent breakout sessions that will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024 from 3:00–5:00 p.m.

  • A session on academic publishing and developing a book proposal will be led by John Warren, the program director for GW’s MPS in Publishing Program.
  • A session on grant writing will be offered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research.

  • “Loved the structure! Loved the writing tips! Loved the reflection and planning tips!”
  • “In terms of my research and scholarship, this retreat was the most fruitful and inspiring activity I have participated in since joining GW.”
  • “This was such a tremendous benefit to me as a faculty and really helped reinvigorate me heading into the summer. I feel so motivated and have a jump start.”
  • “Having a chance to really concentrate on my scholarship was a powerful way to kick off the summer, and it helped me to build the momentum to keep going. I also appreciated the opportunity to be with so many other people from around the university. Seeing their focus and hearing about their projects was motivating. … I really feel like I work in a community of scholars.”
