The GW Latino Medical Student Association is hosting a Latinas in Medicine and Research event on March 19th at 12:00-1:00 PM in Room 201A in Ross Hall in celebration of Women’s History Month, and we would love to see you there!
This event is intended to provide Latina and underrepresented students with the opportunity to learn from professionals in the healthcare field who have already established successful careers in clinical, research, and education roles. There will be a facilitated panel discussion followed by an open discussion with attendees and our guests.

Our guest speakers:
Dr. Maria Portela Martinez is a board-certified family medicine physician with more than a decade of clinical experience. She earned her medical degree from the Ponce School of Medicine, completed her family medicine residency at Duke University Medical Center, and holds an MPH with concentrations in public health leadership and health policy and management. She also completed the Leaders for Health Equity Fellowship at George Washington University and has served as an executive board member of the National Hispanic Medical Association. She was recognized as a 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health award recipient by the National Minority Quality Forum in 2017.
Dr. Ana María del Río-González is a mixed methods researcher in sexual and mental health and Chair of the Prevention and Community Health Department at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. Her research examines how intersecting identities and structural factors contribute to health inequities among marginalized populations. Her work on HIV prevention among Latina transgender women has been supported by the Emory/DC CFAR Adelante program, DC CFAR pilot awards, and the CDC’s Minority AIDS/HIV Research Initiative. She received the NIH Sexual and Gender Minority Research Office Early-Stage Investigator Award in 2022 and the Trans-Latinx DMV Community Honors Committed Ally Award in 2021.
