DESCRIPTION:In April 2024\, the US State Department released the 2023 repor
t on the Human\nRights Practices in Thailand. The report painted a grim pi
cture of the Thai human\nrights situation at a critical juncture in which
the then government of Srettha Thavisin\nfailed to address the human right
s problems and the monarchy continued to\nchallenge the constitution leadi
ng to intensifying application of laws to suppress its\ncritics. Since the
release of the report\, Thailand made another dangerous turn\, with\nSret
tha forced to step down\, the pro-reform opposition Move Forward Party\ndi
ssolved\, and now with Paethongtarn Shinawatra becoming the prime minister
.\n\n \n\nThis talk will focus on the human rights problems facing Thailan
 d in a specific\ncontext of the excessive use of lèse-majesté law\, or A
rticle 112 of the Criminal Code\,\nwhich forbids anyone to criticise the m
onarchy. Since the enthronement of King\nVajiralongkorn in 2016\, there ha
s been a sharp increase of lèse-majesté cases\,\nparticularly against yo
ung activists who called for immediate reforms of the\nmonarchy and Articl
 e 112. In May 2024\, a young activist\, Netiporn Sanesangkhom\,\ncharged w
ith lèse-majesté\, died in prison due to hunger strike. Her death reiter
ated\nthe fact that the monarchy has remained at the heart of the Thai pol
itical crisis.\nMeanwhile\, the new Paethongtarn government has announced
that it would not\nsupport the reform of Article 112\, supposedly because
of its close partnership with\nthe monarchy. The speaker will discuss the
lèse-majesté situation and his own\ninternational advocacy in raising aw
areness of the problems of lèse-majesté law.\n\n \n\nThe speaker will al
so bring with him a mobile exhibition. Titled “Objects of\nDisruption\,
” this exhibition will showcase 10 images that convey the ongoing activi
sm\namong Thais who have sought to “disrupt” the political status quo.
The speaker has\nworked with a group of Thai artists in Thailand in the p
 roduction of these artworks.
