This panel will ask Peru’s 2020-2021 President, Francisco Sagasti, and Retired U.S. Ambassador, Stephen McFarland: What can be done to return Peru to a democratic path? What can be done by Peruvians, by the United States, and by international institutions? President Sagasti, an expert in strategic planning and development, was elected to an interim presidency by his fellow legislators. Ambassador McFarland was raised in part in Peru and served as Political Officer there; he was the 2008-2011 U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala and was active in the effort to assure the inauguration of Bernardo Arévalo, the president elected in 2023 but opposed by corrupt political elites in the country.
