Please join us for a conversation with the former Department of State’s Coordinator on Global Anti-Corruption, Richard Nephew. Mr. Nephew will discuss his career journey as an anti-corruption, sanctions, and nuclear deterrence expert. Mr. Nephew will also discuss the latest trends in nuclear deterrence and diplomatic sanctions. Mr. Nephew will share his experience leading teams in the fight against global corruption and the lessons learned to mitigate the rising challenges in the United States and the world. Lunch will be provided.

This event will take place on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm in Room 505.

Richard Nephew is a security policy expert who was named as the Department of State’s Coordinator on Global Anti-Corruption by Secretary Anthony Blinken. In this role, Nephew integrated anti-corruption efforts across U.S. diplomacy and foreign assistance. Currently, Mr. Nephew is a Senior Research Scholar at Columbia University, where he researches economic statecraft, sanctions, nonproliferation, and anti-corruption. Nephew served as deputy special envoy for Iran, Principal Deputy Coordinator for Sanctions Policy, and Director for Iran on the National Security Staff. He also served in the Department’s Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, as well as in the Office of Nonproliferation and International Security at the Department of Energy. He is also the author of The Art of Sanctions: A View from the Field, published by Columbia University Press in 2018. Nephew is a dual alumnus of the Elliott School, holding an MA in Security Policy Studies and a BA in International Affairs.
