Bibliometrics is a way of quantifying citations and connections in scholarly journals, books, and researcher outputs. It measures the impact of a work by counting how often it’s cited by others, and is used as one indicator of a work’s influence on a field. This introductory workshop demonstrates key tools for bibliometric research, focusing on OpenAlex, Biblioshiny, and VOSviewer. OpenAlex provides access to a vast dataset for analyzing scholarly publications, while Biblioshiny, an R-based tool, enables advanced bibliometric analysis through an intuitive interface. VOSviewer offers powerful visualizations of bibliometric networks, including citation and co-authorship networks. Participants will learn how to use these tools to gather, analyze, and visualize bibliometric data, enhancing literature reviews, citation analysis, and research impact studies. This session focuses on tool use and interpretation rather than on performing statistical analysis.

All sessions are free to GW students, faculty, staff, and alumni. GW has an institutional commitment to ensuring that all of our programs and events are accessible for all individuals. If you require any accommodations to participate in this event, please contact libraryevents@gwu.edu at least 72 business hours (3 business days) prior to the event.
