Please join us for a conversation with the Human Rights Policy Officer at the Delegation of the EU to the US. Ms. Ali Cain will discuss the efforts made by the EU to abolish the death penalty in the United States. Lunch will be provided.
Historical Context
It has been 40 years since the European Union and its member countries banned the death penalty in alliance with the European Convention on Human Rights. As of today, Belarus is the only European country that still employs capital punishment. The United States is one of the EU’s most essential strategic allies, yet they have a glaringly different opinion of the use of capital punishment. Today, the United States is on the list of countries with both the highest incarceration rates and the number of executions in the world. The Delegation of the European Union to the United States of America has been championing the abolition of the death penalty in the United States for years and continues to do so.
