As SpaceX announces it will bring Tom Cruise to space for a movie and humanity contemplates the possibility of life on Mars, the vast majority of the oceans remain unexplored. In fact, more people have set foot on the moon than have reached the bottom of the ocean. In this event, we will first discuss the fundamentals of international law and the law of the sea through an examination of some of the key parts of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. We will then analyze how these pertain to some of the most pressing political issues of our time, and point out some future issues that deserve some more attention.

This event is part of the Foreign Affairs with Future Leaders series. These are youth-led discussions which analyze various international issues and topics by collaboratively addressing their most critical questions. They are co-hosted by the Onero Institute and the Delta Phi Epsilon Professional Foreign Service Fraternity and Sorority at GWU.
