The Global Pandemic and Press Freedoms in Southeast Asia

Impact on the media in the region

Poster of Southeast Asia with text introducing the virtual event: The Global Pandemic and Press Freedoms in Southeast Asia

Join us for a virtual panel discussion on the impact of the global pandemic on civil liberties in Southeast Asia. As the regional governments struggle to contain the spread of COVID-19 and its variants, some of the more authoritarian regimes are imposing stricter restrictions to stop misinformation and taken this opportunity to rein the media in their countries.

Our panel of experts - Dr. James Gomez, Asia Center; Gayathry Venkiteswaran, University of Nottingham; and Adrian Ayalin, ABN-CBS News, will share their views and experiences of what has been happening in the region. They will be calling from Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Dr. Janet Steele, Director of the GW Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication will moderate the session.
