Are you interested in cultural immersion abroad? Are you interested in applying to a nationally recognized language award?

Each year, several GW students are awarded the Boren Scholarship and Critical Language Scholarship (CLS). The Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research (CUFR) looks forward to supporting the next cohort of Boren and CLS applicants.

CUFR will host two virtual information sessions in August to introduce students to these awards, their eligibility requirements, and the application process. This information session will cover the same material as the August 25 session, so students only need to attend one. Please register for these information sessions in advance to receive program-specific information.

This session is presented by the the Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research (CUFR). CUFR offers inclusive support and mentorship for undergraduate students and alumni pursuing awards and research opportunities. If you are interested in learning more about research or fellowship opportunities, consider booking a consultation with CUFR.

Hartley (LAW 1972) to discuss his recent book, The Assault on American Labor Law: Unions Before the Supreme Court, 1965–2025. This installment of the ongoing labor history book talk series will conclude with an opportunity for attendees to ask questions.

In The Assault on American Labor Law, Hartley meticulously examines six decades of Supreme Court decisions on the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), uncovering a troubling trend. Through his analysis of nearly 100 cases, he argues that the Court has frequently functioned as a de facto legislative body, reshaping the NLRA’s collectivist foundations to favor businesses and individual interests over workers. According to Hartley, this judicial shift has left many American workers confronting globalization, deindustrialization, and technological change without the collective power and protections provided by union representation. His comprehensive study sheds light on the roots of the current labor law crisis, offering a critical perspective for restoring workers’ rights to organize.

Professor Roger C. Hartley, Catholic University Law School’s most senior faculty member, has been a cornerstone of the law school since joining the faculty in 1974. He has taught a wide variety of courses but specializes in Labor Law, Constitutional Law, and Federal Courts. A prolific research scholar, he has published five books – four published in the past ten years – as well as dozens of Law Journal articles. Renowned for his exceptional teaching, Professor Hartley has been voted teacher of the year multiple times, most recently recognized for providing students with unparalleled support. Professor Hartley has been recognized by other labor scholars as a “highly respected and prolific labor law scholar” whose scholarship is “impeccable.” His most recent book, The Assault on American Labor Law, has been lauded by his peers as “vividly illuminating how the evolving law detrimentally affected workers and the labor movement.”

Transparency Beyond Assignments

Students value knowing why things are the way they are in their courses: why do that reading, why engage in the activity the way you’ve structured it, why find five sources? In this 30-minute workshop, we’ll explore different ways to think about transparency for any component of your classroom and identify particular areas where a little bit of transparency might go a long way. While the Center for Teaching Excellence often talks about transparent assignment design, the principle has applications across all aspects of teaching.

We will discuss how to choose appropriate topics, frame productive and authentic questions, facilitate engaging discussions, and make pedagogical choices like whether to reveal your own views. Throughout, we'll highlight how building these skills in class conversations supports students’ development as democratic citizens.

But what about if the data you are interested in is published continuously, changing from moment to moment, and your research depends on collecting this data around the clock?

This workshop will discuss sources and uses of realtime data, and walk through one strategy of setting up a realtime data collection pipeline utilizing AWS, Terraform, and Python. Some programming experience (including working with command line interfaces and Python) is expected for following along, but is not required for attendance.

If you would like to follow along in the workshop, please install Terraform on your operating system and register for a free-tier AWS account.

But there are reasons to abstain from AI use regardless of the answer, including AI’s environmental impact and ethical questions about training data and human labor. This workshop explores several dimensions of informed AI resistance, including: the role of context in shaping decisions about whether to use AI; talking with students and colleagues about AI use; responding to students who do not wish to use AI tools; and recognizing and staying up-to-date on what AI tools can do even if you do not use them yourself. Throughout, our goal will be to explore the case for what Tazin Daniels calls “intentional, informed non-adoption of AI.” rather than naive or reactionary resistance.

This workshop is presented by the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE). The CTE provides comprehensive, integrated solutions for instructors in search of teaching solutions.
