Truth, Lies, and Democracy: Tuesday, April 12, 5PM via Zoom

Abstract: It is a commonplace these days to say that we have entered a post-truth age and that, as a result, democracy itself is unusually in peril.  But the roots of the present crisis of truth are deep—or at least considerably deeper than the history of Facebook and Twitter.  The full story, going back all the way back to the birth of modern democracy, reveals the instability of the category of truth from the start, as well as the way it has become increasingly strained in the conflict between expertise and ordinary experience.
