The best career advice I ever received was, “Take the pen.”
Over the years as I’ve moved between the public and private sectors, the advice has taken on different meanings, but above all else, it has taught me there is more than one way to demonstrate leadership.
Despite what society tells us about what leaders should look, sound, and act like, the people I’ve learned the most from never fit a traditional mold. They all took the pen – or the other tools they had available to them – in their own way. What mattered was how they used those tools to ask the right questions and hone the skills and traits that helped them become effective leaders: sound judgment, strong communication, and strategic thinking.
