Unionization in the Museum: A Talk with Lauren Woodring, Philadelphia Museum of Art

Philadelphia Museum of Art

The Museum Studies program at GW will be joined by Lauren Woodring, a Research Analyst in the Development Department at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA), to talk about the successful unionization effort at the PMA. The PMA Union won their vote on August 6 with 89% of employees voting for the union. The union started about a year before with informal conversations around work and pay disparity. They filed for an election in May. This union is the first wall-to-wall union at a major art museum. The PMAU is currently undergoing negotiations to win their first contract. They are excited that since their election, several other museums across the country have decided to file for a union and hope that the momentum continues!

Lauren Woodring holds a B.A. in History and Political Science from Lebanon Valley College, a M.A. in History from LaSalle University, and a MLitt in Museum Studies from the University of St Andrews. She is a member of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Union's Organizing Committee. Additionally, she is on the board Apra Pennsylvania, on the Chapter Committee for Apra International, and member of the Prospect Development Best Practices Committee for the Association of Advancement Services Professionals.  She lives in Philadelphia with her cat.
